AWS WorkSpace and Google Chrome

AWS WorkSpaces is a cloud-based virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) service that lets users access desktop applications and data from devices with internet access. When AWS WorkSpaces is used for AIQ testing, review the browser’s third-party-cookie and Chrome policy settings.

Enable third-party cookies

Enable third-party cookies in the browser used to record and run AIQ test scenarios. AIQ tests may need to store and retrieve cookies from domains other than the domain currently open. This is important for authentication and other workflows that rely on cross-domain cookies.

For example, if the application uses a third-party identity provider, disabling third-party cookies can prevent the browser from storing the provider’s authentication cookie and cause login to fail. It can also prevent accurate simulation of workflows that depend on third-party tracking cookies.

• Simulate user behavior, including login credentials or session IDs.
• Preserve session state so a user can return to the application and continue.
• Exercise new-user and returning-user scenarios.
• Improve performance-test efficiency by avoiding repeated login steps when the workflow permits.

Chrome policies

Amazon WorkSpaces supports Google Chrome, and administrators can enforce Chrome policies such as:

• Block access to the Chrome Web Store.
• Disable automatic Chrome updates.
• Block pop-up windows.
• Block downloads flagged as unsafe.
• Enable Chrome Safe Browsing.

Inspect Chrome policies

Use either of the following methods to review the policies applied to the Chrome browser in the WorkSpace.

Export policies to a text file

1. Open a new Chrome tab.
2. Enter chrome://policy in the address bar and press Enter.
3. Review the policies currently applied, including user and system policies configured by your IT administrator.
4. Select the policy text and copy it with Ctrl+C on Windows or Command+C on macOS.
5. Paste the copied text into a text editor or another application for analysis or sharing with your IT administrator.

Export policies to a JSON file

1. Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the Amazon WorkSpaces console.
2. Select the WorkSpaces directory whose Chrome policies you want to export.
3. Open the Group Policy tab and select the group policy containing the Chrome settings.
4. Click Edit beside the Chrome Policies section.
5. In the Chrome policies editor, click Download.
6. Choose a local destination and click Save.
7. Use the JSON file to import the policies into another Amazon WorkSpaces directory or share it with IT administrators.
