Read and Write Data from a Downloaded XLSX File in Scenario Editor

Use this article when a Scenario Editor test needs to validate, read, or write data from an XLSX file downloaded during execution. Keep file handling deterministic so repeated runs do not accidentally use stale files.

  • Download files into a known test-specific folder when possible.
  • Validate the file name, extension, size, and modified time before reading it.
  • Use unique names or cleanup steps to avoid reading an older XLSX from a previous run.
  • Check sheet name, row count, column names, and expected cell values before using the data in later steps.
  • Avoid storing sensitive customer data in downloaded spreadsheets unless the test data has been approved.

Validation workflow

  1. Trigger the download in Scenario Editor.
  2. Wait for the file to exist and confirm it is complete.
  3. Read the required workbook, sheet, row, and column values.
  4. Write or compare output values only after validating the workbook structure.
